On Why Specialization Often Fails

My friend, VeraSage Senior Fellow and author of the new and essential Social Media Strategies for Professionals and Their Firms, Michelle Golden, was recently interviewed by CPATrendlines on why it is that specialization in professional firms often fails.

Her solution is simple, but not easy for many firms to do.

So if the choice is specialize and increase price or don’t specialize, what are firms more likely to do?

    Quite a coincidence that you posted this now. I have been grappling with the concept of the engineer and project leader residing in one person whereas these 2 functions require specialization. Integrating these 2 roles is the way that all the Sage BPs that I have worked with operate and is in fact encouraged in the ‘agile’ methodology.
    Anyhow, I have been meaning to get your opinion on this but I would like to structure the question better before posing it.
    I think Michelle addressed an important aspect of the specialization hurdle but not all of it.
